Leak-testing Services

Mishandling or accidents may cause radiographic sealed sources or exposure devices containing nuclear substances to leak and may lead to a significant cross contamination of equipment, attached accessories or, in the worst-case scenario, irradiation of personnel. To ensure that a sealed source is not leaking, the C.N.S.C. mandates leak testing of sealed sources and devices containing nuclear substances at regular intervals.

At Spencer Manufacturing (1983) Ltd., we provide leak-testing services for the following isotopes:
  • Iridim-192
  • Cesium-137
Furthermore, a Leak Test Certificate is issued every time a sealed source exchange is performed.
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission directs the following intervals for leak testing of exposure devices:
  • Exposure devices - 12 months
  • After any incident that could contribute to damage - immediately
  • Exposure devices in storage - 24 months
  • After removal from 12 months of storage - immediately
Leak tests producing results of more than 200 Bq of activity must be reported by the Radiation Safety Officer to the C.N.S.C. immediately and the sealed source or devices containing nuclear substance be secured and taken out of service immediately.

Remember, IT IS ILLEGAL TO SEND LEAK TESTS VIA REGULAR MAIL.  ALL SAMPLES MUST BE SENT VIA COURIER SERVICES.
